Leigh Barrett, the wonderful local favorite who plays Rose in the Stoneham Theatre's solid production, has the big voice and big presence that the part requires. She also has the sensitivity to reveal Rose's softer, more human side; we can see clearly that Rose's ruthlessness. Barrett's singing is, as ever, terrific; it's sheer pleasure to hear her power her way through "Everything's Coming Up Roses" or, more subtly, reveal her charm and humor in "Small World. From the moment Mamma Rose (Leigh Barrett) walked down the aisle, dog in hand, yelling her famous line, “Sing out, Louise! The audience knew that something great was going to be taking place. The commanding Barrett ruled the stage, whether she’s sitting on a trunk silently or belting out “Rose’s Turn”. Barrett’s singing is snappy and resonant. She has that twinkle in her eye and the expressiveness of her face adds such depth to her character that the audience is rooting for Rose even thought she’s incurably frustrating.
